Before You Wear New Work Shoes for a Full Shift
A work shoe can feel comfortable during a quick try-on and still become painful several hours into a long shift.
Before wearing a new pair to work, check more than the cushioning. A good fit should give your toes enough room, hold your heel securely, avoid concentrated pressure, and remain stable while you walk and turn.
Here are five checks to complete while the shoes are still clean and returnable.
1. Check the Toe Space
Stand normally and check the space in front of your longest toe. There should be enough room for your toes to move without hitting the front, but not so much space that your foot slides forward.
Also check the width and depth of the toe box. Your toes should not feel squeezed together or pressed against the top of the shoe.
2. Check the Heel Hold
Walk across the room several times. Your heel should feel secure without painful squeezing or repeated rubbing.
Laces or another adjustable fastening can help keep the heel and midfoot stable during movement.
3. Notice Early Pressure Points
Do not dismiss pinching, numbness, rubbing, burning, or concentrated arch pressure simply because the shoes are new.
A shoe may soften slightly, but a pair that is too short, too narrow, or shaped incorrectly should not require a painful break-in period.
4. Compare the Insoles Carefully
Test the shoe with its original insole first. Then compare a replacement insert when appropriate.
A removable original insole can provide room for a replacement without making the shoe too tight. Check whether the new insert improves comfort or creates new pressure under the arch, heel, or toes.
5. Protect the Return Window
Write down the return deadline as soon as the shoes arrive.
Keep the receipt, box, and packaging until you have completed a clean indoor trial. Test walking, standing, turning, and using stairs before deciding whether to keep, exchange, adjust, or return the pair.
