You know the shift.
You walked in with a plan.
Then the shift changed its mind.
One interruption became five. Several things suddenly felt urgent. The task you started earlier was still unfinished. Your charting was waiting. Your food was untouched. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, you caught yourself thinking:
What kind of shift was THAT?
When Everything Feels Urgent, Sort Before You Move
A chaotic shift is different from an ordinary busy one because the order keeps changing.
You start something. You get interrupted. A new priority appears. Then another.
Instead of trying to hold everything in your head, sort what is in front of you:
- NOW — needs attention immediately
- SOON — important, but not the very next action
- CAN WAIT — still matters, but not yet
- DELEGATE OR ESCALATE — needs another person or additional support
- DO NOT FORGET — capture it somewhere reliable
Recover Your Place After an Interruption
One of the hardest moments in a chaotic shift is:
Wait... what was I doing?
Before automatically jumping into the next task, ask:
- What was I doing before I was interrupted?
- What part was already completed?
- What is still unfinished?
- Is it still the next priority?
- If not, where will I capture it?
The goal is not to create another complicated checklist. It is to stop using memory as the only place unfinished work lives.
Reset the Backlog
When things finally slow down, the pile of unfinished work can feel like one giant problem.
Break it back into decisions.
- What still genuinely needs action?
- What has already resolved?
- What can wait?
- What needs to be handed off?
- What needs documentation?
- What must be closed before you leave?
You do not need the entire shift under control.
You need enough clarity to know what you are doing now, what comes next, and where the remaining loose ends are recorded.
Sometimes the Shift Was Just... A Lot
Sometimes the interruptions never stopped.
Sometimes your food stayed exactly where you left it.
Sometimes your bladder deserved an apology.
And somehow one pen survived.
Some shifts really do earn the question:
What kind of shift was THAT?!
